
According to the UN, marijuana is the most popular illegal drug in the world.
The latest World Drug Report 2011, published by this international institution, includes tasty titbits about cannabis sativa consumption in all corners of the planet.
For example: Japan is the most expensive country for buying marijuana while Togo, India, Guatemala and Tanzania are the cheapest. The report reveals that between 2.8-4.3% of the global population aged between 15-64 consume marijuana.
After Oceania, Africa is the continent where most cannabis is consumed. Specifically, Nigeria, where 14.3% of 15-64 years olds partake, tops the table.
Caribbeans are especially assiduous cannabis users: it is estimated that around 10% of Grenadians, Dominicans and, of course, Jamaicans, consume.
The country where most ganja is smoked is the Republic of Palau in the Pacific Ocean, where 24.2% admit using. High levels of consumption also in the Mariana Islands (22.2%), Australia (10.6%) and New Zealand (14.6%) make Oceania the continent with proportionally the highest number of marijuana users relative to its total population.
In Europe, the Czech Republic, with 15.2%, is the leading cannabis consumer, followed by Italy and Andorra with 14.6% and Spain in fourth place, with 10.6%.
North America, with the USA (13.7%) and Canada (12.6%), includes two world leaders while in Mexico, which, according to the latest information, is the country that tops the cannabis seizure rate table, consumption rates are below 3% though rising.
With consumption rates touching 8%, Argentinians are South America’s most enthusisastic cannabis users.
Asia has the lowest continental consumption rates though Guam, where 18.4% consume, makes it onto the world podium.
